Village of Boomi

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

An area of land had been surveyed for a village west of the Kunopia Settlement, but found to be unsuitable. This area was later taken up by Percival Bowes Fenwick and included in part of Trefusis. Someone must have been anxious to acquire a block of land on the obsolete surveyed land, then moved his thinking elsewhere. Of recent years the Lands Department published a list of unpaid rates, which included a homesite on the land. The owners of Trefusis moved quickly and acquired a minute portion within one of their paddocks.

Among other areas considered, a water diviner found a volume of water in a portion of crown land of Kunopia and plans for the drilling of water took place and the work began in 1899. Boomi came into being and the village grew, as houses, huts and shops appeared in the newly surveyed streets and town blocks.

BISHOP STREET .- the town's main street was named after Bishop Tyrrell who had owned the Kunopia lease in early times.

BOOMI STREET - so called from the early title of the river.

BYRON STREET - named after an Englishman and shepherd.

BENSON STREET - named after Thomas Barker Benson, manager of Kunopia for many years.

DUFF STREET - Duff was a longtime stockman of the area.

BORONGA, KUNOPIA, WERRINA, WHALAN STREETS - these were the names of the earliest holdings in the district.
