The village of Bellbrook was gazetted by its first postmaster, James Toose, in 1882. It's name, given to it by an earlier settler's wife (Caroline McMaugh), was because of the numbers of bellbirds that inhabited the area.

Bellbrook typifies the urban settlements that serviced the developing rural communities of the time. The entire village was registered by the National Trust in 1978 in order to preserve it's heritage value. There are a couple of designated walks that visitors can do with an accompanying brochure to guide you and learn about the history of Bellbrook.

Australian Country Music Legend, Slim Dusty, was born just out of Bellbrook and his childhood home can be viewed by visitors.
