RAILWAY INFORMATION

Local councils do have some information about communities located within their boundaries. You can access this information through the Local Council site through the link found on Local Information Section of this site.

UPPER BINGARA Tourism

Upper Bingara is a former 'gold fever' centre. During the gold rush days, this community was populated by treasure hunters, many of them Chinese, seeking their fortunes. When the gold became too hard to obtain the population declined until today it is just a small rural community.

As a remnant of the days passed, a working alluvial gold mine is open to tourists .

These days, the community is purely agricultural and tourist oriented.

UPPER BINGARA LOCAL HISTORY

This section of the page is designed to provide space for people of the Community to provide local history information about their community and to provide links to relevant history sites related to this community. The management of this site realises that this list may not be complete.

Much of the early history of Upper Bingara is centered around gold mining as, in its peak time, the area was covered with mining claims with a predominant Chines population amongst them. Most were in search of the elusive "MotherLode" which is rumoured to be the source of the heavy supply of gold found down Hall's Creek and even into the Gwydir River. To this day, that mysterious source has not been traced. A reminder of this bygone era is to be found at the Three Creeks Mine, a working alluvial gold fossicking area that is open to the public.

If you know of a local history site that services this community but is not listed here, or would like to use this site to promote your local history, please Email us (using the button at the bottom of this page) and let us know the details, including the community to which you are referring.
