As a major activity of the Tingha Community, the Under 8 years Fun Day is organised and put on by the Tingha Public School and brings children from Primary Schools and Pre Schools from all around the surrounding districts.
Despite the day dawning with much needed rain, the event went on as planned, being reclocated from the school grounds to the Tingha Town Hall. The change of venue meant the cancellation of some outdoor activities but the events inside the hall seemed more than adequate for all the children, who came by the bus load for the day. There was face painting, tiny cake decorating, bead and stamp making, art demonstrations, stalls and demonstrations by the various branches of the emergency service groups. If the sounds of the children was anything to go by, the day was truly a success.
Many long hours of community work was put into the setting up and running of the day and this was acknowledged in the official opening that included a welcome to these Aboriginal tribal lands by local elder, Earl Munro, who spoke his welcome in both the local language (Kamilaroi) and in English.
Like all events of this nature, the thing isn't over when the participants leave as there is all the cleaning up to be done, but in typical community style, community members hopped in and helped in the process, including local footballer, Nathan Blacklock, who handles a broom just as good as a football.
