In the early hours of the morning of 24th January, 2010, a fire struck the old Byron Arcade building (built in 1901), completely gutting the insides of the building. A tribute to the builders and architect of this building is seen in these photos where the exterior walls of the building are still intact and completely contained the blaze.
A number of shops on the street level were destroyed including the offices of the local family history group, where many valuable and original documents were also destroyed in the blaze. The upper floor contained small units and it is good to report that the occupants of all these were safely evacuated with any loss of life.
The picture on the botom right shows a touch of irony to the fire (as well as further testimony to the building) where it can be see to the right of the back of the building, a clothes line with clothes still hanging there, untouched by what was an extremely ferocious fire.
