Many buildings in Grafton are classified by the National Trust including the serene Christ Church Cathedral and notorious Grafton Gaol. Fine old homesteads have been well preserved and the council has purchased and restored "Schaeffer House" which now exhibits the treasures of the Clarence River Historical Society and "Prentice House" which is now the Regional Art Gallery. The Clarence River has always made a special contribution to the appearance and lifestyle of Grafton.
