Information about COPETON DAM

Copeton Waters
For detailed information

Copeton Dam is almost 3 times the size of Sydney Harbour when full and is surrounded by recreation areas. It lies to the south west of Inverell and access can be gained from the Gwydir Highway, where the turnoff is very clearly marked. Access can also be gained from Bundarra and Bingara, with both roads converging before reaching the southern side of the dam. See the Location Map for more details.

It is the most popular holiday and day unit spot around, the lake boasting some of the finest facilities in Northern New South Wales. Hot showers (disabled facilities) and amenities blocks are scattered throughout the 939 hectare park and campers are able to enjoy a free form style of camping. A kiosk (meals available) and laundry are within the park and there are 76 powered camping/caravan sites. Cabins, on-site vans, fuel sales and boat hire are also available. These facilities are located just a couple of kilometres to the south of the Dam Wall.

Other interesting areas around Lake Copeton include the Northern Foreshores which is a 20 minute drive from Inverell along the Auburn Vale Road and is ideal for a day visit or the visitor who does not have a lot of time. The Eastern Foreshore near Tingha also provides for a pleasant day, especially for the more adventurous wanting to explore old mining settlements or enjoy bushwalking. Because this is an old mining area, care should be taken whilst exploring.

Whitewater Rafting below Copeton Dam provides an exciting experience during the season which extends from October to March. This incredible stretch of whitewater is unequalled in Australia for its size and consistency during the release from the mighty Copeton Dam.

For those people seeking to book facilities or obtain further information, please ring the Copeton Dam Recreation Area on (02) 6723 6269 or Email them Direct.
