Pilliga State Forest

The "Pilliga" is a vast unusual forest that is known for its Cypress Pine and Ironbarks. The area is managed for timber productionas well as its unique flora and fauna, its bore baths (artesian water) and the salt caves, located towards the centre of the forest.

Roads in the area are not sealed and so drivers should take extreme care and, it is recommended that visitors should check on road conditions and closures before travering the forest. These checks can be made by contacting the Baradine Forestry Office on (02) 6843 1907.

Visitors should also note the following when visiting the area:

• Streams are only intermittent. Drinking water is only available atthe Alloes and Schwagers Bore. Other bores have high mineral content that can cause stomach upsets.

• Always follow the indicated routes.

• Many people depend on the forest for their livelihood. Try not to obstruct these people as they work.

• Fires may onlyu be lit in constructed fire places.

• Avoid using the forest during wet, windy or fire periods.

• Do not damage plants or disturb animals.

• When traversing the region, either on foot or in a vehicle, make sure that someone knows where and when you are going.
