LIMITED STOCK PROGRAMMES.

HERD FILE, FLOCK FILE & PET BREEDER

There are a number of programmes in the ArComPro suite of software relating to the management of breeding and keeping animals.

Whilst all of these programmes are similar in both appearance and operation, there are some differences. The main one of these is that each programme saves its data with a different set of file extensions so that operators with more than one programme, cannot override data from one with another when the same master filename is used.

Apart from the obvious reasons for the similarity (that requires no additional learning for extra programmes) it also means that data is readily transferable. This is particularly important when taking data from the LIMITED STOCK PROGRAMMES (programmes which many operators commence with) to the specific STUD BREEDER PROGRAMMES. All this upgrade is an easy step for operators requiring a simple change of extensions (covered in the manual).

The MASTER SCREEN contains the basic information about the animal itself, including data of parents and grandparents, disposal information, and an extended area of data blocks (now 9 instead of 6) that are defaulted as Data 1-9 (Data 1-6 in LIMITED STOCK programmes) but can be called whatever the operator requires for a particular file.

ANIMAL MANAGEMENT is the second area of data. This area includes drenching, inoculations and other relevant data that may need to be recorded. Up to 300 entries per animal are possible.

PROGENY SCREEN: The area of progeny data contains space for the progeny stud number, its sex and 50 characters of information (can be used for date of birth, name or whatever) about the progeny. A total of 300 entries available. This screen is not applicable to LIMITED STOCK programmes.

COMMENTS SCREEN: Allowing the operator to make comments on stud animal for future reference. It works as a basic word processor and allows for up to 50 lines of information. This screen is not applicable to LIMITED STOCK programmes.

Files can be updated at any time and printouts of each animal are readily available. These printouts can be in the form of lists, basic animal information or total. Printout includes the ability to create lineage lists of particularly animals. These can be either in the form of a block diagram (back to the great grand parents) or in a lineage file trace for total printout.

HOW THE PROGRAMME OPERATES.

The data is able to be edited (or new data added) through the F4 EDIT function key> Choosing the ADD choice within this area takes the operator to the end of the existing files and allows a new animal to be added. The UPDATE facility allows the operator to enter various sections of the data to update or add data to the animal.

The data headings labelled in the programme as DATA # are the default headings and can be changed for each use of the programme. The purpose behind these was that different operators require to keep additional information. At the time of the Version 5 upgrade, ArComPro had a list of about 150 different aspects that stud operators wished to keep. This would have meant having a whole lot of data entries which would be irrelevant to individual users, taking up valuable disk space. However, the one thing that was noticed was that nobody in our list used more than 6 at any one time: the inclusion of 9 gave room for scope and catered for most needs. Editing of these heading is done through the INTERNAL DATA section of the programme.

Access to a whole range of programme management tools is now available through the F1 MANAGE function key. This includes access to the SEARCH facility and the various SYSTEMS OPERANDS facilities, including the INTERNAL DATA section. The SORT facility (which can be coupled with the PRINT facilities) can also be accessed through this section.

The F2 NEXT and F3 PREVIOUS keys allow the operator to move through the individual animal files.

F5 PRINT allows both the displayed file to be printed and access to the full print range.

F7, F8, F9 and F10 keys allow the operator to move between the respective screens where applicable.

Following is a list of the MASTER SCREEN entries and their relevance to each type of programme.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES.

Within the INTERNAL DATA facility there are a number of other useful facilities.

BLOODLINES: This is a basic word processor that allows a file to be kept on each of the blood lines that a particular stud has within it. This allows the operator to abbreviate the bloodline data for each animal to either a name or a file number.

IMPORT/EXPORT FILES: This facility allows an operator to pass the information pertaining to an individual animal to a floppy disk for transfer to another file. This facility is desirable when stud animals are sold as the new owner is then able (if their software permits) to just import the data from the disk without having to type it in and risk mistakes. This facility can also be used when passing an animal from a stud into the herd or flock file programme.
